Halloween keeps getting bigger. According to the National Retail Federation's 2025 consumer survey, U.S. Halloween spending reached a record $13.1 billion, with the average celebrant spending $114.45. Costumes alone account for $4.3 billion — and tucked into the top five adult costumes, right between the vampire and the pirate, is an animal with serious staying power: the cat. About 1.6 million adults planned to dress as a cat, tied with pirates and a certain caped crusader.

That is a lot of cat ears. But here is the question nobody asks at the costume store: what if you do not want to wear a costume at all?

Why Cats Own Halloween Night

Cats and the spooky season have been circling each other for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, cats were honored as protectors and linked to the goddess Bastet. Fast forward to medieval Europe, and folklore flipped the script: cats, especially black ones, became tangled up in superstition and witch lore. When those beliefs crossed the Atlantic, the black cat landed right in the middle of America's Halloween iconography, next to the pumpkin and the broomstick.

So cats win Halloween twice over — as folklore and as a costume. The industry numbers prove it: for adults, only the witch (5.6 million) and the vampire (2.7 million) beat the cat.
