The Legend

Korea has long been called “the land of the tigers.” In the founding myth of Dangun, the nation’s first kingdom begins under a tiger and a bear who wish to become human; only the bear endures the hundred-day ordeal and becomes the mother of Korea — while the tiger waits in the mountains, never fully gone, the older brother of the story. For centuries the Korean tiger, horangi, walked into every household as a guardian: mountain-spirit paintings place the great cat beside the deity of the peaks, while folk paintings of magpie and tiger were hung at the new year to call in luck and frighten away misfortune. Korean folk tales never make the tiger merely frightening — he is strong, proud, dignified, and often outwitted, a tiger with personality and humor. The white tiger, baekho, guards the west in traditional cosmology, a symbol of courage, protection, and autumn metal energy. Today that bold, protective tiger spirit travels with the Korean diaspora from Seoul to Los Angeles: fierce when it matters, warm at home.
