The Legend

The Aztecs, a wandering people from Aztlán, were told by their gods to build their city where they found an eagle perched on a prickly-pear cactus, devouring a serpent. After generations of migration, they saw that sign on an island in Lake Texcoco in 1325 — and there they raised Tenochtitlan, the great city that became Mexico City. That image — águila, nopal, serpent — has lived at the heart of Mexico’s national seal ever since. In Aztec society, the golden eagle was the emblem of the Cuáuhpilli, the Eagle Knights, the most prestigious warrior order a fighter could enter; eagle warriors wore feather regalia into battle and saw the sun itself as a great eagle crossing the sky. Cuauhtémoc, “descending eagle,” was the name of the last Aztec emperor. Today the águila real remains the soul of Mexican identity — in murals, folk art, lucha libre, and the pride of the Mexican diaspora from Los Angeles to Madrid.
