The Legend

In 1782 the bald eagle was adopted as the emblem of the newly independent United States — selected by the Founding Fathers, after a famous debate in which Benjamin Franklin argued for the turkey, for its long life, great strength, and the fact that it belongs to this continent alone. The Great Seal carries an eagle bearing a shield, an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other — peace ready, power held. Long before 1782, bald eagle feathers were among the most sacred objects of Indigenous nations across North America; in Plains cultures, an eagle feather earned through courage is an honor beyond price, used in ceremony and headdress with deep protocol. By the 1960s the bald eagle nearly vanished under pesticides and habitat loss; protected and revered, it recovered and was removed from the endangered list in 2007 — a comeback story Americans claim as their own.
